Did you accidentally get some spray paint on your driveway? Well, you’re in the right place, and by the end of this article, you will be able to apply these easy steps that will help you get spray paint off your driveway completely.

Find out about the paint removal techniques to use when the spray paint is still fresh and methods you can try for more stubborn paint stains on your asphalt.

Good Old Soap & Water

If the spray paint on your driveway is still wet, soap and water should be able to remove it. This method might work on dry paint, but you will most likely need to try a more labour intensive method.

Step 1: Clean the Area

Before scrubbing your driveway, sweep it clean. Be sure to do a thorough job and remove as many dirt particles as possible.

Step 2:  Scrub

Using a heavy-duty scrubbing brush (not a wire bristle brush) and a bucket of soapy water, scrub the affected area until the paint starts to come loose and fade.

Step 3: Rinse

Take a hosepipe and rinse the driveway before drying the area by dabbing it with a dry towel or paper towels. Repeat if necessary.

Graffiti Remover

Although there are multiple ways to remove spray paint from a driveway, graffiti remover works wonders. Out of all the products I have tested, I found Lift-Off by Mostenbockers to be the most successful.

There are natural solutions you can try, made from citrus, like this Safe and Easy citrus paint & varnish remover. This product works well on most surfaces and is much safer to use compared to harsher chemicals.

Step 1: Apply the Solution and Let It Soak

Apply your choice of remover to the affected area and let it soak. Depending on the brand of remover you are using, follow their recommended soaking time.

Step 2: Scrub, Scrub, Scrub

Applying a bit of pressure, scrub the area with a heavy-duty brush. The spray paint should lift right off, but if it is tough and you can’t see much of a difference, repeat the process until you are satisfied with the results.

Step 3:  Prevent Runoff on a Steep Driveway

Should you have a steep driveway, ensure that you lay down some rough surface painter’s tape to prevent the thinned spray paint from running downhill, creating a huge mess.

Most of these removers require multiple applications to achieve the desired effect, so repeat where necessary.

Paint Strippers

Most people will use a chemical stripper to remove paint from surfaces. While this method works, you need to ensure that you use strippers made explicitly for concrete or asphalt.

Paint strippers that will work on asphalt and concrete include:

  • Mineral Spirits
  • Turpentine
  • Naptha
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Acetone
  • Methylene chloride

Step 1: Take Precaution

These chemicals are toxic and can be highly flammable, so ensure that you wear protective gloves, goggles, and masks when using them. Also, be vigilant, and make sure that they are not contaminating the area around your home and your neighbor’s home.

Step 2: Apply and Let It Soak

Apply your solution of choice to the area of spray paint and let soak until you see the paint starting to thin or run.

Step 3: Scrub Away That Spray Paint!

Using a scrubbing brush, scrub away the paint. This method is perfect for older and damaged driveways, as in most cases, you will not need to use a high-pressure water system that can further damage your driveway.

Ways to Remove Stubborn Spray Paint from Driveway

Pressure Washer

Using a pressure washer is the most environmentally friendly method to remove spray paint from your driveway. If you don’t have one, it is possible to rent them, and you won’t be sorry. Enquire at your local hardware store. Alternatively, you can rent them from Lowes or Home Depot.

I find this method the most fun and a fulfilling way to remove spray paint from asphalt. Just watching how the high pressured water blasts away not just the paint but all the dirt as well is very satisfying.

The best model to use would be one having between 2000-3000psi of power. This is the optimum strength required. You can rent a more powerful model, but be prepared to pay more for it.

Blasting

There are different blasting methods you can try on your driveway. These methods include:

Sand Blasting / Dry Ice Blasting

You can rent a sandblasting or dry ice blasting machine that shoots sand, glass beads, or dry ice at an accelerated speed onto hard surfaces like concrete until it is smooth.

This method can remove all types of paint, rust, and can be used to prepare the area for a new coat of paint. There are speed settings on the machine to adjust it for your specific surface.

Shot Blasting

You can remove spray paint from your concrete driveway with shot blasting. Steel shots are blasted across the affected area, removing up to 3ml of the concrete’s surface. You should not use this method on asphalt as it is softer than concrete and could get damaged in the process.

A big plus for using this method is that the dust is picked up through a collection system in the machine, which means clean-up will be minimal.

Dustless Blasting

Instead of using a sandblaster that creates a cloud of dust when used, opt for dustless blasting. This method involves mixing water with the abrasive creating wet sand inside the machine. This will increases its mass which makes its impact more aggressive and efficient.

As the sand will be wet when applied to the surface, there will be little to no dust, making the area easier to clean afterward and preventing you from inhaling dust particles!

Asphalt Grinding

Instead of using a shot blaster on asphalt, you can use an asphalt grinder. This machine is excellent at removing stubborn spray paint from asphalt.

This machine is what road workers use to eliminate lines from roads. Along with eradicating paint, it also removes up to a ¼ inch depth of the surface. Eventually, this new, clean area will start to blend in with the rest of the driveway.

Paint the Area

If you have tried every possible step and are still unsatisfied with the results, you can always paint over the affected area.

For the best results, use a black asphalt sealer to cover any stubborn paint residue. For long-lasting and even results, I would recommend painting the whole driveway.

Final Thoughts

Always try to remove the spray paint from your driveway as quickly as possible. The longer it has to dry, the harder it will be to remove it.

When using harsh chemicals, ensure you are wearing protective clothing like gloves, glasses, and masks.  You do not want to absorb these toxic chemicals into your skin, have any contact with your eyes or inhale too much of it.

If you are experienced enough, try more evasive measures to remove stubborn spray paint like sand or shot blasting.  Shot blasting has been proven to be very successful but takes skill to operate.

If all else fails, paint over your entire driveway with asphalt sealer for a smooth and flawless finish.
